About Aromatherapy/Essential Oils: Implementing aromatherapy into your life can be tremendously beneficial to your mind, body, and spirit. Please bear in mind, however, that therapeutic-grade essential oils are powerful, and can be harmful if not used carefully and with caution. The tips below are not a complete safety reference. If you are unsure about using essential oils, please contact your doctor or a trained aromatherapy practitioner.

There are a few cautions you should be aware of before using Essential Oils:

  • Always read the complete label before using essential oils.
  • Essential oils are flammable.
  • Many essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy or by those that have health conditions such as asthma or epilepsy. If you are unsure about specific oils, consult your doctor.
  • Essential oils should not be taken internally unless you have a prescription or expressed consent from your medical doctor or aromatherapy practitioner.
  • When dealing with essential oils, less is more. Essential oils are very powerful and just a small amount will go a long way.
  • Some essential oils can trigger sensitization or allergic reactions. Before using a new oil you should always do a skin patch test on a small area of skin (such as the inside of your elbow). Some essential oils should never be used on the skin if not diluted. If at any time an oil starts to irritate, rub the area with vegetable oil. If irritation persists, discontinue the use of that particular oil.
  • Be aware that citrus oils may cause an increased sensitively to the sun. Avoid prolonged sunbathing after applying pure citrus oils to the skin.
  • Many essential oils are considered toxic for animals, especially cats, as their physiology is different from that of humans. For this reason, use of essential oils on or around pets is never advised without first consulting your veterinarian.
  • Never let children use essential oils without adult supervision. Keep lids securely fastened and out of the reach of children.
